Columbia Artists Announces Appointment of Joseph V. Melillo as International Artistic Advisor
Columbia Artists announces the appointment of Joseph V. Melillo as International Artistic Advisor. This new position was created for Melillo, who comes to Columbia Artists from the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), where he “helped shape the academy’s cutting-edge aesthetic for more than three decades” (New York Times). Drawing on this rich body of experience and his own singular vision, Melillo will guide Columbia Artists’s producers, managers, and agents as they embark on the next stage of the company’s journey, developing bold new opportunities for producing live performance events, international touring, co-productions and artistic collaboration.

Tim Fox, Columbia Artists President and CEO, explains:

“We are honored to welcome Joe to Columbia Artists. It’s impossible to think of a more distinguished or accomplished performing arts producer; he’s worked at the highest level, with the most important multidisciplinary performing artists and arts creators alive today. We are eager to begin collaborating with him to develop new projects and artistic adventures.”

Melillo responds:

“I am very excited by this generous invitation to make a contribution to Columbia Artists and their current artistic roster, and to channel my BAM experiences and resources to broaden new artistic opportunities both nationally and internationally with targeted creative and strategic alliances.”

Over the course of his 35-year tenure at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Joseph V. Melillo proved himself a visionary of performing arts production. He not only forged dynamic partnerships with such iconic artists as Philip Glass, Pina Bausch, Mark Morris, and Robert Wilson, but also furthered BAM’s global reach through initiatives like The Bridge Project and DanceMotion USAsm, a cultural diplomacy program created in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State. Having first joined the organization in 1983 as Founding Director of the groundbreaking Next Wave Festival, he went on to serve BAM as Producing Director and, from 1999, as Executive Producer. In that position he was responsible for the organization’s artistic direction for the next two decades, during which time the company enjoyed increases in both programming and audience attendance.
Melillo has been recognized with many prestigious honors, including the Chevalier and Officier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government, an honorary OBE from Great Britain, the title of Knight of the National Order of Québec, and the 2018 Bessies Presenter Award for Outstanding Curating. He has served on the faculty of Brooklyn College and as a lecturer at colleges, universities, and arts agencies around the world. Alongside his new role at Columbia Artists, he also continues in residence as a Director’s Fellow at New York University’s Center for Ballet and the Arts.
